The second annual smart grid and advanced technology learning event, 'Gridposium 2011: Best Practices, Strategies and Smart Grid Vision,' will highlight the experiences of small and mid-sized utilities and telecommunications companies that are implementing and deploying smart grid technology..
Gridposium, co-sponsored by NISC and the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC), will include presentations on the following topics:
- Can regulation, consumer demand, enviros and technology square with safe, reliable and affordable electricity service? Peter Fox-Penner, author of “Smart Power, Climate Change, the Smart Grid and the Future of electric Utilities,” and chairman emeritus of the Brattle Group addresses the issue.
- The info-power connection—meters to markets. ACEs Power Marketing’s CEO David Tudor talks about the importance of the local smart grid to power markets.
- MDM experiences from the front line. A panel of representatives of electric co-op’s who have or are rolling out meter data management talk about their experiences.
- Will technology, the Internet, smart phones and an aging electric utility grid intersect in an app? “Smartgrid Man” offers a provocative look at the looming future.
- The NRECA Smart Grid Project: data, communications, security and interoperability. NRECA’s Martin Lowery provides an update and insight into the Association’s electric co-op DOE projects.
- New technology = new risk. Michael Goodroe, CEO of Sawnee EMC, Georgia, talks about the “how and why” of rolling-out new technology at the 160,000 meter cooperative.
- Chuck Callies, VP of Power Supply for Dairyland Power on how the G&T uses demand response managing distribution system load.
- Meter company representatives discuss the state of intelligent meters
- The Cloud: new home for mountains of utility data? A co-op of 20,000 meters will register almost 500,000 hourly reading a day from their smart meters. Where is all this data stored. NISC’s Vern Dosch talks about the growing stature of data in the utility industry.
- The smart grid will need a robust communications path. NRTC’s new CEO, Jack Harvey leads a panel of local co-ops who have made the connection.
- And the survey says, “Consumers and the Smart Grid: Opportunities and challenges are two sides of the same coin,” the results of the latest Utility Pulse survey from the Shelton Group.

Airport Pickups
Barton Creek provides shuttle transportation to and from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. for a fee of $43 per person per way. Please be sure to request shuttle service when making your hotel reservation.
To request shuttle service, visit Barton Creek’s Transportation Page and scroll about half way down the page. There you will find a form that will allow you to reserve a shuttle to or from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Please see example at the bottom right of this page.
For Barton Creek Airport Shuttle Requests:
- Online Reservations need to be submitted three business days in advance of arrival.
- Within those three business days, please call Barton Creek guest Services at 512-329-4535 to make reservations.
- All of the information requested on the form is required. Partial information cannot guarantee a reservation.
- Barton Creek guest services will track your flight for early or late arrivals and adjust accordingly to pick you up.
Arrivals: All ground transportation for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is located on the lower level outside the baggage claim area. Exit the doors and proceed to your right to the “Hotel Courtesy Area” near pillar #5. The Barton Creek van (green and white with Barton Creek logo) will be waiting in this area. If you cannot locate the van, please call Barton Creek guest Services at 512-329-4535 for assistance.
Departures: Departure vans leave for the airport every hour on the hour. Barton Creek recommends that you depart 1.5 to 2 hours prior to your flight time. The airport is 30 minutes from the resort. A departure notice will be delivered to your guest room the night before you depart to confirm your shuttle departure time.
